Foster families: first-aid and CPR standards

Becoming a family foster home in Kansas means giving a child a safe and nurturing place to stay. Among the requirements to complete before a license is issued: passing an instructor-led first-aid course and a CPR course. It is one step within the wider licensing and assessment process.

The first-aid requirement

Under Kansas Administrative Regulations (K.A.R. 30-47-806), before a license is issued each applicant must successfully complete an instructor-led first-aid course with a post-test and an instructor-led CPR course with a post-skills test, appropriate for the ages of the children to be placed. The licensee must maintain current CPR certification.

The requirement is enforced by the Kansas Department for Children and Families (DCF), and licensed homes must also complete a minimum of eight clock hours of training each licensing year. The first-aid and CPR courses are in addition to the home study and family assessment — completing them does not by itself qualify a person to foster.

How to meet it

A recognized, up-to-date first-aid and CPR certificate meets this requirement. It is in addition to the required training or assessment, and is renewed periodically.
